Our Vines Have Tender Grapes (1945)
Made in a era when "the movies" meant larger than life, this film, adapted from George Victor Martin's book by master dramatist Dalton Trumbo and starring Edward G. Robinson, is remarkable for its look at the inherent nobility of an ordinary farm family.
Robinson Portrays Martinus Jacobson, an immigrant farmer who wants simply to work his land and be a loving father to his little daughter Selma (Margaret O'Brien) and husband to his wife Bruna (Agnes Moorehead). The seasons pass, nature lends her bounty and unleashes her awe-inspiring destruction, and they all learn essential lessons about life-and morality.
diracted by Roy Rowland (The Lost Angel), this quiet account of the best in the American character was, ironically, Dalton Trumbo's last major studio project before he was blacklisted during the anti-communist hysteria of the late 1940s and 50s.

The Red Menace (1949)
Taken seriously by only a few, THE RED MENACE still caused a sensation with its anti-Communist propaganda. It was a clear sign of the times-McCarthyism in America.
When a disgruntled ex-soldier (Robert Rockwell) gets no help from the Veterans Bureau, he is ripe for the influences of Communists who lead him down the party line. But he soon meets up with disillusioned party members who attempt to break out.
Restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive, THE RED MENACE was produced by Herbert J. Yates, founder and president of Republic Pictures. Like other Hollywood producers in 1949, he was eager to prove his loyalty to the government. The Senate Fact-Finding Committee on Un-American Activities rewarded him with a commendation for his work on this film.

The Scent Of Green Papaya (1993)
A love story of exquisite beauty and originality, The Scent Of Green Papaya is the Cannes favorite that won the coveted Camera-d'Or and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Set in Vietnam in the 1950x and '60x, it is the story of a shy peasant girl, who comes to Saigon at the age of 10 as a household servant. Beneath the calm exteriors of the lovely home where she works is an undercurrent of lost love and marital discord. Attuned to the people around her and enchanted by nature, Mui grows into a beautiful young woman who inspires her upper class lover to break with convention. A visual feast as well as an emotional triumph, The Scent Of Green Papaya is an unforgettable film experience.
